MATT TODD FINISHES 5TH IN THE STATE

Todd Places Fifth in State Wrestling Finals

The second time proved to be a charm for Mason Todd as he placed fifth in his second trip to the IHSAA Individual Wrestling Championships held Friday and Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse. As a freshman Todd made an early exit with a Friday night loss to Bryan Kuhn of Evansville Reitz. This time around Mason left no doubts in the opening round as he defeated Fort Wayne Semi-State champ Logan Randle of Huntington North  by a score of 4-3. The match was close throughout with the Viking senior desperately attempting to turn Todd in the third period. Mason’s win was one of only two by fourth place finishers in 56 opening night match-ups between first and fourth-place Semi-State placers.

In Saturday morning’s quarter-final round Todd came up against the state’s top ranked 112 lb wrestler in Mishawaka senior Paul Beck. Beck defeated Kuhn in Friday’s opening round. After a scoreless first period the Caveman senior scored two near-falls in the second period to open a 6-0 lead. The final score of 11-0 was a disappointment, but not an end, for the precocious Arabian sophomore. In his first wrestle-back match Mason rebounded to defeat Pike Central junior Cody Kendle by a score of 10-6 in a match he controlled by Todd from the first period. The win moved Mason into the fifth-place match. (The IHSAA does not have a full wrestle-back bracket and the championship semi-final losers go directly to the third place match.)

Awaiting Mason was Cathedral’s Brian Harvey. In the three matches between them this season Todd had a win in the Regional sandwiched between losses in the regular season and the Semi-State to the Irish sophomore. The two had also faced off in an epic match in last year’s Semi-State consolation match in which Mason had prevailed. With no score in the shortened first period Todd chose the bottom position in the bottom period. Mason scored a quick reversal for a 2-0 lead. Near the end of the period Harvey escaped for a 2-1score. In the final period Harvey chose down hoping to escape to tie or reverse for the win. Neither happened. Todd constantly pressured his rival and stayed in control for the entire period to secure the win. The placing completes a remarkable year that saw the last brother of the Todd family wrestling dynasty win an ISWA state title to earn a spot on Team Indiana where he placed fifth in the ASICS Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota to earn All-American honors. Brothers Mitch (a Semi-State champion and state qualifier) and Matt (the 2009 IHSAA runner-up at 160 lbs) have worked extensively to help Mason and other Arabian wrestlers improve their skills to compete at the top level. With a returning state place-winner, three other returning Semi-State qualifiers and only two losses created by graduation, the next season looks good for Arabian Wrestling.

Staff Report

those individuals are from Yorktown. Included in the half dozen grapplers
advancing are two semi-state champions. They are Derek Bevans at 125 lbs. and
Devon Jackson at 130 lbs. It is worth noting that both young men are undefeated
for the entire season. Bevans is 51-0 while Jackson is 50-0.

Four other
schools advanced one wrestler each to the big show in Indianapolis. They are
Delta, Greenfield-Central, Pendleton Heights, and New Palestine. None of those
individuals earned semi-state titles.

GBB SECT. 8: Greenfield-Central, host Pendleton Heights advance

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
PENDLETON – The styles were different, but the results were the same Feb. 11 in both first-round games of the Pendleton Heights Sectional. Both Greenfield-Central and Pendleton Heights scored lopsided victories, and that sets up the rematch of the regular-season contest won 50-48 by Greenfield that everyone wanted to see between the Hoosier Heritage Conference foes.
The Cougars brought a quick end to Anderson Highland’s last appearance in state tourney action by downing the Scots, 69-51, Thursday night. Meanwhile, the host Arabians stymied Muncie Central, 44-25.
You may rest assured that Greenfield-Central coach Doug Laker is telling his charges they learned a lesson from the Anderson Highland game. Sometimes when things are too easy, they can become very difficult.
The Cougars (16-5) jumped to a 14-1 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the game. After that torrid start, they seemingly relaxed on defense, and it nearly came back to bite them.
By the end of the first quarter, the Scots (8-13) had stopped the bleeding and trailed 25-14. At intermission, they had cut the margin to 38-31. Still, it seemed it would make little difference because Greenfield-Central was scoring at will.
That all changed at the outset of the second half.
The Cougars came out of the locker room frigid offensively. On their first 10 possessions covering over four minutes, they scored only two points and committed four turnovers. It was a tailor-made opportunity for Anderson Highland to finish the comeback.
The opportunity, however, went by the wayside as the Scots also managed only two points during the stretch. Greenfield regained its rhythm and finished the quarter with a flurry of points to increase the lead to 50-38.
The Scots never managed to threaten in the fourth stanza.
Kelsey Bryant was the Cougar who did the most damage. The talented senior guard poured in a game-high 26 points. Junior Jessica Lark did her best to extend the life of her Scots, tallying 21 points in the contest.
Game 2: Pendleton Heights 44, Muncie Central 25
The Pendleton Heights-Muncie Central game started far more competitively.
The Arabians led at the end of one quarter, 16-12. They carved out that advantage primarily because of strong work on the offensive boards. The Bearcats managed to keep pace by creating open-court situations that got their scorers to the rim.
That second thing, though, ended all too abruptly and dramatically.
Coach Shari Doud switched her Arabians (17-5) from a modest three-quarter-court press back to a sagging man-to-man defense in the half court. The simple move effectively ended Muncie Central’s evening.
The Bearcats (7-13) went the next 14:23 without a single point, and they did not dent the scoreboard again until 1:37 remained in the third period. By then, Pendleton Heights had built a 31-12 lead, and the verdict had long been decided.
Wright State-bound Mur Hagerman had an outstanding game for Pendleton Heights, scoring 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. However, it was the outstanding performance of young Kenzie Gustin that truly bedeviled the Bearcats.
Gustin scored 10 points by seemingly always being in the right place at the right time during the contest. It is also impossible to make too much of the defensive job junior Hannah Douglas did on Muncie Central’s talented Jamie Drummer.
Drummer ended with 13 points, but many of them were in the fourth quarter after the game had been decided.
So, one team advanced with a devastatingly potent offense while the other employed a smothering defensive effort. It sounds as though the rematch will live up to its billing.
8. Pendleton Heights Sectional

Game 2 – Pendleton Heights 44, Muncie Central 25

5 WRESTLERS TO SEMI-STATE

Five Arabian Wrestlers Advance to New Castle Semi-State

In spite of bad weather and tough competition, five Arabians competing in Saturday’s Pendleton Heights Wrestling Regional advanced to the Semi-State to be held in New Castle’s Fieldhouse next Saturday.

Junior Kyle Smitherman finished fourth in a tough 215 lb weight class. He will open his Semi-State with Jason Pedigo of Zionsville.  Clint Nicholson scored a takedown in overtime over Alex Bowers of Noblesville to finish third at 145. He will wrestle South Vermillion’s Ross Hoggatt in the opening round at New Castle.

Three Arabians advanced to the championship round. Freshman Zach Wise finished second at 103 after a come-from-behind win in the first round and a fall in the tournament’s second round.  He sports a 36-6 record on the season and will open his Saturday against Josh King of Roncalli.

Sophomore Mason Todd had two falls to open the day before winning his first Regional crown with a 9-2 decision over Cathedral’s Brian Harvey. The win pushed his record to 40-1 and avenged his only loss of the season. His first opponent will be the fourth place finisher from the Richmond Regional, which was delayed due to Friday’s snow storm. Justin Eshelman had a first round fall and a 9-2 semi-finals victory before he claimed his first Regional title with a 9-3 win over Jordan Johnson of Lawrence North in the finals. Justin will face the fourth place finisher from Richmond on Saturday. The senior standout improved his season record to 37-4.

Also competing Saturday for the Arabians were sophomore Brian Philbert at 119, senior Jasper Moffit at 160, who is an alternate for New Castle, and junior Hunter Prol at 285.

WR: PH WRESTLERS FINISH AT SECTIONAL

Wrestlers Finish Second at Hamilton Heights Sectional

The PH Wrestling Team finished second in Saturday’s Hamilton Heights Sectional. Missed opportunities spelled the difference for the Arabians in the title chase. Pendleton Heights earned points in 12 of 14 weight classes compared to only 11 placers for the champion Noblesville Millers. But Noblesville’s 11 wrestlers all placed in the top four compared to 8 for PH. Several close losses during the day proved too much for the Arabians to overcome. With only two seniors on the roster, the Arabians look to be championship contenders again next year, but the road will not be easy as Noblesville has no seniors on its team. Any hopes of a title will rest on working on improvement during the coming offseason.

Sixth place finishers for PH were Alex Ray at 135 lbs and Joe Gipson at 189. Placing fifth for the Arabians, and serving as Regional alternates were junior Cody Stephenson and sophomore Jake Stilwell. Placing fourth for the Arabians, and advancing to the Pendleton Heights Regional, was senior Jasper Moffitt at 160. Zach Wise at 103 and Brian Philbert at 119 each grabbed third place finishes on the day. Sophomore Clint Nicholson advanced to his first sectional final where he finished second at 145 lbs. He will take his 21-11 record up against a third place finisher from the Lawrence Central (LC) Sectional.  Junior Hunter Prol, who assembled a 19-7 record in his first year of varsity competition, finished second at 285. Nicholson and Prol will wrestle third place finishers from the LC Sectional in the first round of the PH Regional on Saturday.

Sophomore Mason Todd pinned Alexandria’s Luke Blanton in only 2:37 the 112 lb championship match to grab his second career Sectional championship. Todd, who now sports an outstanding 37-1 season record, will open his tournament Saturday with a fourth place finisher from the Lawrence Central Sectional. Senior Justin Eshelman completely controlled Alexandria’s Josh Blanton in the 125 lb championship finals for his first career sectional title. Eshelman, who improved his season record to 34-4, will also open his tournament run Saturday with a fourth place finisher from the LC Sectional. Junior Kyle Smitherman pinned his longtime nemesis, J.R. Smart of Lapel in just :54 of the finals to claim his first career title at 215 lbs and an opening round match with LC’s fourth place wrestler.

Former Arabian assistant coach Jack Grimaldi lead the much-improved Alexandria Tigers to a fourth place team finish, after capturing their first conference title in decades last week.
