Five Arabian Wrestlers Advance to New Castle Semi-State
In spite of bad weather and tough competition, five Arabians competing in Saturday’s Pendleton Heights Wrestling Regional advanced to the Semi-State to be held in New Castle’s Fieldhouse next Saturday.
Junior Kyle Smitherman finished fourth in a tough 215 lb weight class. He will open his Semi-State with Jason Pedigo of Zionsville. Clint Nicholson scored a takedown in overtime over Alex Bowers of Noblesville to finish third at 145. He will wrestle South Vermillion’s Ross Hoggatt in the opening round at New Castle.
Three Arabians advanced to the championship round. Freshman Zach Wise finished second at 103 after a come-from-behind win in the first round and a fall in the tournament’s second round. He sports a 36-6 record on the season and will open his Saturday against Josh King of Roncalli.
Sophomore Mason Todd had two falls to open the day before winning his first Regional crown with a 9-2 decision over Cathedral’s Brian Harvey. The win pushed his record to 40-1 and avenged his only loss of the season. His first opponent will be the fourth place finisher from the Richmond Regional, which was delayed due to Friday’s snow storm. Justin Eshelman had a first round fall and a 9-2 semi-finals victory before he claimed his first Regional title with a 9-3 win over Jordan Johnson of Lawrence North in the finals. Justin will face the fourth place finisher from Richmond on Saturday. The senior standout improved his season record to 37-4.
Also competing Saturday for the Arabians were sophomore Brian Philbert at 119, senior Jasper Moffit at 160, who is an alternate for New Castle, and junior Hunter Prol at 285.
