It was a clash of the titans April 22 when Class 4A No. 5 Carmel tangled with 4A No. 8 host Pendleton Heights. In the end, it proved to be a game worthy of the billing as the visiting Greyhounds escaped with a 6-5 triumph in nine innings in a contest that was every bit as close as the score indicates.
The Greyhounds did their best to deliver an early knockout punch as Carmel plated three runs in the very first frame. That momentum, however, lasted only as long as it took Pendleton Heights to grab its bats as the Arabians answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own.
Carmel tried again, scoring a single run in the top of the third to retake the lead. The Arabians immediately answered with an “anything you can do, we can do better” attitude. Pendleton Heights returned the favor in the bottom of the third by plating two runs and taking a 5-4 lead.
It was at that time that Carmel coach Emily Good went to the bullpen, and that was the difference in the game. Katie Osborne took the mound for the Greyhounds and allowed just two hits and no runs while striking out 10 in the final six innings of action.
Meanwhile, Carmel scratched across a single run in the top of the fourth to tie the contest at 5-5. The ’Hounds finally dented the scoreboard again in the top of the ninth, and that was enough for the victory.
Carmel scored those six runs on 11 hits and committed two errors, while Pendleton Heights scored its five on eight hits with two errors as well. The marathon clash lasted two hours and 28 minutes.
It was the second loss for the Arabians (8-2), who also fell 2-0 to currently 4A fourth-ranked Lake Central back on April 11 at their own Horseshoe Classic. Carmel moves to 8-1 on the season, the Greyhounds’ only defeat a 4-2 decision last weekend to now-3A No. 4 Boonville at the Pioneers’ annual Southern Slam.
