BOYS BASKETBALL DEFEATS SHENANDOAH 52-38

By using solid defense and timely shooting, the Pendleton Heights boys basketball team ended its four-game skid by earning a 52-38 road win at Shenandoah on Friday night.

The Arabians got 23 points from Nathan Hendershot and eight more from freshman Kendall Waters in the game. Hendershot also added four rebounds and six steals.

Shenandoah was held to 38 percent shooting (14-of-37) and got off nine fewer shot attempts than did the Arabians. PH forced 24 turnovers and committed only 11, including just four in the second half.

The game remained close for most of the first half, but the Arabians started to pull away late in the second quarter. Trailing 17-14 after a Kyle Brinson 3-point play, Austin Gardner and Waters got back-to-back layups before senior Michael Maxwell hit a 3-pointer and Hendershot connected on 1-of-2 free throws. That 8-0 run went a long way in deciding the outcome of the contest.

Pendleton Heights head coach Brian Hahn was generally happy with the win, especially his team’s play in the second half. He said Hendershot’s shot selection was “great” and that the team needs him to score to have he chance.

“He’s one of the few guys we have that can break the defense down,” Hahn said.

Eight players scored for the Arabians in the game. Maxwell hit two 3’s and scored six. Patrick Obras also had six points, Kellen Dunham 3, and Ryan Albers, Gardner, and Swartz each had two.

PH is back in action tonight when conference foe Rushville comes to town. Outfitters and the basketball booster club ask fans to bring “Socks for Santa” by bringing a new pair of socks to the game. They also ask that people dress up in Christmas attire for the evening.

ARABIANS DEFEAT RUSHVILLE FOR WEEKEND SWEEP

     This was a big one.

The Pendleton Heights boys basketball team came up with enough plays late to hold off Rushville 76-70 on Saturday night.

Rushville entered the game with a 4-1 record, but the Arabians were unafraid. They fell behind 22-12 by the end of the first quarter but got contributions from virtually everybody they put in the game.

Nathan Hendershot led PH with 25 points on an efficient 8-of-13 shooting and freshman Kendall Waters added 20 points including multiple key 3-pointers. Michael Maxwell hit three 3’s and scored 15 points while Kellen Dunham added six and two more 3’s.

Austin Gardner and Ryan Albers each scored four points for the Arabians.

“It was big because everybody contributed,” PH head coach Brian Hahn said. “Even our eighth and ninth guys came in and gave us good minutes.”

After the Arabians had led for most of the night, Rushville came back and took a 65-64 lead with 2:51 remaining. But the young PH club didn’t falter. Waters came down and knocked in an uncontested 3-pointer only 30 seconds later to give the Arabians a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The win was the second in a row for PH who is now 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference. The Arabians enter a two week holiday break the right way and will be in action again at Frankton on January 5th in the first round of the Madison County tournament.

GBB: HHC Race Remains Tight At The Halfway Point

It is hard to believe, but the girls’ basketball season is
half over. The race for the Hoosier Heritage championship may be just heating
up. Three teams remain undefeated heading into the Christmas break That sets up
the potential for a very hot race in the second half despite the cold weather
outside.

Rushville crushed Delta 77-39 Saturday to move to 4-0 in the
conference and 8-1 overall. At that, they have not been able to shake Pendleton Heights. The Arabians closed the first
half with a 68-25 drubbing of non-conference foe Shenandoah. The victory left Pendleton Heights with the exact same score card
as Rushville, 4-0 and 8-1.

The surprise at the top is in the form of New Palestine. The
Dragons downed Yorktown Saturday evening to
improve to 3-0 in the league. The final in that contest was 51-45. Overall, New
Palestine is only 4-4, but don’t let that fool you. The Dragons play a tough
early season schedule.

The remaining conference teams all have at least two losses
at the midway point.

The first key date in the race is January 17th.
On that night, Rushville will visit Pendleton
Heights
. The Lions then face
new Palestine at
home on the 24th. Pendleton
Heights
will visit the
Dragons on January 31st.

If you are looking for a spoiler, you may have a difficult
time finding one. Greenfield-Central is the other conference team standing
above .500 on the season. The Cougars are 6-4 on the campaign. However, they
have already lost to both of the top teams. They do have a date left with New
Palestine. That comes on January 17th.

ARABIAN WRESTLING FINISHES SECOND

The Arabian Wrestling Team dropped a heartbreaker to East Central High School in the fourth round match that determined the team champion at Saturday’s Arabian Super Six. The visiting Trojans won the dual 36-33 in a battle that came down to the last weight class. The match looked like a blowout early for the Trojans who enjoyed a 36-15 lead after 10 weight classes. The Arabians stormed back to win the last four weights and almost push the match to a tie breaker. The match lifted the Trojans towards a 5-0 record for the day with the Arabians finishing 4-1.

In the first round of the day the Arabians quickly dispatched Winchester by a 51-21 score. The Arabians built a quick lead which they never relinquished. The Arabians had six falls in the match, five of which came in the first period of the match. Matt Todd had the quick fall for the Arabians in :46.

In the second round the Arabians faced Anderson Highland. The Scots have set the standard in recent years in Madison County wrestling and the dual was one the wrestlers and coaching staff had been pointing to as a test of where they stood against their county and sectional rival. The Scots jumped to an early 13 point lead which the Arabians whittled down and finally erased with a fall by Kyle Smitherman at 215 lbs, a :14 fall by heavyweight Brian Catellier, a first period fall by Mason Todd (103) and first period buzzer-beating fall by Andrew Wilson (112) for the final margin of 45-29. Catellier’s pin tied Matt Todd for the fastest of the season.

The third round saw the Arabians sprint to an easy win over a young and inexperienced Elwood squad. In addition to five forfeits, the Arabians grabbed seven falls, four of which came in less than a minute. The final team score was 72-6. Jake Stilwell had the team’s fastest fall in :33.

After the East Central match in round four the Arabians closed the day with 64-9 rout of Muncie Central. The 4-1 record was good for a second place team finish on the day for PH. The team will now point towards the Madison County Wrestling Championships this coming Saturday at the Wigwam in Anderson. Wrestling begins at 8:30.

Five Arabians claimed weight class championships on the day: Mason Todd, Andrew Wilson, Eric Jarrett (125), Clint Nicholson (145) and Matt Todd (160) were all undefeated. Justin Eshelman (119) and Cody Stephenson (140) were each 4-1. Nick Holt (152), and Kyle Smitherman eached finished 3-2. Matt Todd won the award for the most falls in the least wrestling team with five falls in a total mat time of 5:45

Team Results

2) PHHS               4-1

3) Highland          3-2

GBB: Pendleton Heights Downs Greenfield-Central In Defensive Battle

Pendleton Heights news Bureau

The Arabians of Pendleton Heights traveled to Greenfield Central for a tough match up in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.  It
was a tale of two halves for Coach Shari Doud’s Lady Arabians as they
struggled to handle the physical play of Greenfield Central early on.  GC forced the Arabians into 7 first half turnovers and held them to a miserable 2-18 from the field.  The
Arabians were able to stay close throughout the first half, however,
pressuring Greenfield Central into several miscues of their own to send
both teams into the locker room with GC on top 13-9.

Pendleton Heights approached the third quarter with an adjusted mind-set as they went on a scoring rampage.  Five
different Arabians found the scoreboard during the period led by Mur
Hagerman’s 6 points and Hannah Douglas’ 5 points and 3 steals in the
quarter.  PH forced Cougar Coach, Doug Laker into
calling three third quarter time-outs trying to adjust to the defensive
pressure that PH was throwing their way.  At the end of three quarters the Arabians changed the complexion of the game with a convincing 27-14 lead.

As typical, the Cougars were not finished.  They
battled their way back in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to 5
points at 29-24, behind leading scorers Kelsey Bryant and Cierra Hall.  The Arabians clung to a lead throughout after spreading their offense out and forcing GC to foul.  Lacey Martin hit two free throws late in the game giving the Arabians the cushion they needed to finish.  Even
though the Cougars outscored the Arabians in the quarter, 14-8, it was
not enough as the Pendleton Heights Arabians came away with the win,
35-28.  Coach Shari Doud was pleased that the defense held up throughout the game even through the offensive droughts.  “We always preach to our players that defense doesn’t have to rely on a percentage.  When
poor shooting nights happen, defense can often times pull a team
through to a win.. and that was definitely the case in today’s game.”

The Arabians were led by junior guard, Mur Hagerman, who scored 17 points.  Hannah Douglas contributed 9 points.  Amanda Gaskin led the rebound category with 9.  This improves the PH record to 6-1 and a perfect 4-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.  The Arabian junior varsity team was also victorious against GC as they won by a score of 38-24.  Courtney Sigler led the Arabians in scoring with 11 points.  Coach Mark Wright’s JV squad owns a perfect 7-0 record .  Both teams will be

BB: Mt. Vernon ‘makes the plays’ in 59-50 win over Pendleton Heights

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

FORTVILLE – “Make a play.”

That phrase has become the No. 1 cliché in all of sports in recent years. Nonetheless, it aptly describes the Dec. 12 Hoosier Heritage Conference game between host Mt. Vernon (Fortville) and Pendleton Heights.

At two key points in the game, Mt. Vernon (2-1 overall, 1-0 in conference play) found someone who could “make a play” whereas the Arabians did not. That, in essence, was the difference in the Marauders’ 59-50 victory.

STAY TUNED FOR PICTURES AND VIDEO!!!

The first half of this contest was, frankly, rather uneventful. Pendleton Heights (1-4, 0-2) shot poorly from the field and, despite doing a good job on the defensive end, found itself in a 28-19 hole at intermission. It could have been much worse had it not been for a nice job by the Arabians of denying Mt. Vernon’s top weapon, junior P.J. Hubert, very many quality shot attempts in the first two quarters.

Whatever adjustments coach Brian Hahn made at halftime, the Arabians took them to heart. Pendleton went on an immediate 10-2 run to start the third quarter, closing the gap to 30-29.

That was the first critical juncture in the game as Mt. Vernon responded with an 11-0 run of its own, sparked by five points from Hubert. The Arabians, whose offense was dependent on perimeter jump shots all night, went cold during the stretch.

Pendleton eventually regained its footing but still trailed by 10, 43-33, heading to the fourth quarter.

The Arabians refused to go quietly. They again charged back, cutting the margin to three at 47-44 early in the fourth. They even had the ball with a chance to tie.

Once again, however, nobody stepped up to “make a play.” Mt. Vernon scored the next six points, most of them a result of solid defense, and regained control 53-44.

The Marauders would never be threatened again.

Mt. Vernon put three players in double figures for the contest. Senior Brad Voltz led the way with 17 points, while the junior tandem of Daniel Turner and Hubert chipped in with 12 and 10, respectively. Pendleton Heights was led by another solid effort from Nathan Hendershot, who tossed in 16 markers on the evening.

PENDLETON HTS FALLS SHORT ON TWO RUNS AT MT.VENON

Not once, but twice did the Pendleton Heights boys basketball team erase double-digit second half deficits to cut it to three or less.

But the Arabians could never quite get over the hump.

Mount Vernon came up with the big plays late and defeated PH 59-50 in a raucous Fortville venue.

The Arabians had many chances, but each time they narrowed the margin, the Marauders went on a huge run and put them right back where they started.

     Consider:

·         After a 10-0 run in the third quarter cut the Mount Vernon lead to one at 30-29, the Arabians watched their opponent run off 11 consecutive points over a four minute stretch. PH had several empty possessions during that run.

·         Even though the previous run appeared to take everything out of the Arabians, they would fight back again in the fourth quarter. An 8-0 run over a two minute, 35 second period sliced the lead to three (47-44). But after a turnover that turned into a Mount Vernon layup, PH again found itself out of it as the Marauders scored the next six points.

·         Trailing 51-44 with 2:47 remaining in the game, a rebound bounced off of three Arabians defenders and ended up in the hands of Brad Voltz for a layup. Then, just a minute later with the score 53-46, PH’s Austin Gardner tried to carrel a missed free-throw and watched the ball bounce off his foot.

PH head coach Brian Hahn was disappointed with the loss, but he said his team brought the effort it lacked against Hamilton Southeastern last week.

“We had some struggles offensively, but one of the things I was pleased with was our effort defensively,” Hahn said. “I really thought we did a better job competing on the boards. I said at Hamilton Southeastern that I was disappointed with our competitive effort in the first half and tonight I didn’t feel that way.”

Nathan Hendershot led the Arabians scoring with 16 points, but he made on 6-of-17 shots from the field. Senior Michael Maxwell contributed 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and freshman Kellen Dunham added a season-high 10 points.

PH is back in action next Friday night when it travels to Shenandoah.

W: Pendleton Heights Goes 4-1 At New Castle Invitational

Pendleton Heights News Bureau

The
Arabian Wrestling Team pushed its record to 10-1 Saturday at the New
Castle Invitational with wins over Zionsville, New Castle, Arlington
and Franklin County. The Arabians opened the day’s competition against
a strong Zionsville team. Senior Eric Jarrett at 125 lbs wrestled one
of the best matches of his career to earn an 11-0 win early in the
match. The team score remained close throughout the contest and was not
decided until the Arabians got falls from junior Henry Nichols at 189.
and sophomore Kyle Smitherman at 215 to wrap up the match with a score
of 34-25.

The
Arabians’ next opponent was New Castle. The host Trojans sprinted to an
early lead and held a 16 point cushion after the first six weight
classes. The Arabians then won six of the final eight weight classes to
secure a 39-32 victory. Parker Savage’s win at 140 was one of the keys
to the win. Trailing 4-2 with seconds remaining, the Arabian senior
scored a reversal and two-point near fall as time expired for a 6-4
win. Freshman Clint Nicholson earned the first varsity win of his
career with a first period fall in the 145 match.

The
third match of the day pitted the Arabians against the defending HHC
champion New Palestine Dragons. Though the Arabians wrestled well at
points, New Palestine emerged with a solid 40-24 victory. There were
several close match-ups that could have closed the gap and the Arabians
will have to work hard to turn those matches around at the HHC
Championships in January.

The
fourth opponent for PH was an undermanned Golden Knights team from
Indianapolis Arlington. The Arabians won five of the seven matches
actually wrestled (out of 14 weight classes) for a 71-10 victory.

The
final match of the day was with the Wildkats of Franklin County. The
Arabians prevailed by a score of 69-6. Freshman Alex Ray pinned his
opponent in the first period—for a team-leading third time this season.
Also with first period falls in the match were Justin Eshelman at 119,
Matt Todd at 160, Jasper Moffitt at 171. Freshman Zach Sanner earned
his first career technical fall with a 17-2 decision in the 125 lb
match.

Two
Arabians remain undefeated on the season. Freshman 103 lb. Mason Todd
and senior Matt Todd both sport perfect 11-0 records. Junior Justin
Eshelman and senior Nick Holt at 152 are 10-1. Sophomore Andrew Wilson
at 112, Henry Nichols and Kyle Smitherman all stand 9-2. Matt Todd was
named Wrestler of the Meet by the coaching staff.

The 2008-2009 Arabians, the 40th
PH Wrestling Team, now has 10 wins for the season. With eight matches
remaining the team is a threat to break the record for wins held by the
1986-87 team, which went 17-4.

After
a Tuesday match with HHC foe Mt. Vernon, the Arabians host their own
Super Six on Saturday, December 13. The Arabians will face Madison
County rivals Anderson Highland and Elwood along with Muncie Central,
Winchester and a strong East Central team. The Highland Scots are the
defending county champions and the match with them will give a preview
to the Madison County Championships which are one week later.
