LADY ARABIANS PREVAIL IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE, TOP GC

The Arabians of Pendleton Heights traveled to Greenfield Central for a tough match up in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.  It was a tale of two halves for Coach Shari Doud’s Lady Arabians as they struggled to handle the physical play of Greenfield Central early on.  GC forced the Arabians into 7 first half turnovers and held them to a miserable 2-18 from the field.  The Arabians were able to stay close throughout the first half, however, pressuring Greenfield Central into several miscues of their own to send both teams into the locker room with GC on top 13-9.

Pendleton Heights approached the third quarter with an adjusted mind-set as they went on a scoring rampage.  Five different Arabians found the scoreboard during the period led by Mur Hagerman’s 6 points and Hannah Douglas’ 5 points and 3 steals in the quarter.  PH forced Cougar Coach, Doug Laker into calling three third quarter time-outs trying to adjust to the defensive pressure that PH was throwing their way.  At the end of three quarters the Arabians changed the complexion of the game with a convincing 27-14 lead.

As typical, the Cougars were not finished.  They battled their way back in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to 5 points at 29-24, behind leading scorers Kelsey Bryant and Cierra Hall.  The Arabians clung to a lead throughout after spreading their offense out and forcing GC to foul.  Lacey Martin hit two free throws late in the game giving the Arabians the cushion they needed to finish.  Even though the Cougars outscored the Arabians in the quarter, 14-8, it was not enough as the Pendleton Heights Arabians came away with the win, 35-28.  Coach Shari Doud was pleased that the defense held up throughout the game even through the offensive droughts.  “We always preach to our players that defense doesn’t have to rely on a percentage.  When poor shooting nights happen, defense can often times pull a team through to a win.. and that was definitely the case in today’s game.”

The Arabians were led by junior guard, Mur Hagerman, who scored 17 points.  Hannah Douglas contributed 9 points.  Amanda Gaskin led the rebound category with 9.  This improves the PH record to 6-1 and a perfect 4-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.  The Arabian junior varsity team was also victorious against GC as they won by a score of 38-24.  Courtney Sigler led the Arabians in scoring with 11 points.  Coach Mark Wright’s JV squad owns a perfect 7-0 record .  Both teams will be in action again Monday night, December 15th as they travel to Alexandria for a 6:00 JV tip.
