PENDLETON HEIGHTS LOSES 2nd STRAIGHT SHOOTOUT

The Pendleton Heights Arabians boys’ varsity soccer lost to the Shelbyville Golden Bears, 2-1 in a league contest.

Pendleton Heights nearly played the spoiler role, taking conference co-leader Shelbyville to a shootout before coming up short. In what has become a typical defensive and low-scoring match for the Arabians, the two teams were locked in a scoreless tie at half time.

Shelbyville scored just minutes into the second half, but Pendleton Heights evened the match at 1 on a penalty kick by Kyle Eby after Shelbyville committed a foul within the 7-yard line.

The rest of the half was marred by fouls, yellow cards and one red card and neither team could put the ball in the net.

During the shootout, Kyle Eby and Kevin Mellinger socred goals but Shelbyville was a perfect 4-for-4 while Pendleton Heights missed on their third and fourth attempts.

The Arabians travel to the other conference leader’s home, New Palestine, on Thursday.

Arabians Put the Hammer on Delta

Junior Varsity Football Tops Delta 24-0

The Junior Varsity Football Team became the first PH football team to score a victory on Delta’s new artificial turf. The Arabians defeated the Eagles by a score of 24-0 to move their record on the season to 3-2 and extend their winning streak to three games. The Arabians took the ball on the opening drive from their own 40. The ensuing 60-yard scoring drive was capped by a 10-yard run by Austin Earley. Sophomore quarterback Evan Mohr then hit Earley with a pass for the two point conversion.

In the second quarter sophomore running back Jacob Lyons scored on a 15-yard run to increase the lead to 14-0. Mohr again connected with Earley on the two-point conversion. The Arabians sealed the win in the fourth quarter with a five-yard touchdown run by sophomore offensive lineman Joe Gipson on a “guard eligible” play. It was Gipson’s first ever touchdown. Mohr then showed great poise in getting out of an Eagle tackler’s grasp to again hit Earley in the corner of the end zone for the two point conversion.

On defense the Arabians were downright stingy with two impressive red zone stands to preserve the shutout. Phil Holden was tested repeatedly by the Delta passing attack and passed with flying colors as he picked off two passes on the night and kept his receiver without a single reception in the game. Austin Aul recovered a fumble caused by Joe Gipson on a critical fourth down play to snuff out another Delta drive. Coach Mike Wilkins’ defense forced the Eagles to punt on the majority of their possessions and took the ball on downs on two occasions.

The next scheduled game for the Arabians is October 12 at Rushville.

Junior Varsity Football Team Defeats Mt. Vernon

After spotting the visiting Mt. Vernon Marauders the first score of the night, the Junior Varsity Football team rolled to four unanswered touchdowns on its way to a 30-12 HHC victory.  On offense, Jacob Lyons scored on a 15 yard run and Austin Earley added a 20 yard dash to the endzone. Evan Mohr scored twice on quarterback sneaks. A strong offensive line effort opened holes for runners all night as well as giving the quarterback ample time to throw. The Marauders recorded no sacks for the evening. Earley, who is rounding back into shape following an early season elbow injury, also caught three 2-point conversion passes from Mohr.

After the opening drive, the defense gave the visitors little room to operate and sacked the Mt. Vernon quarterback repeatedly when he dropped back to pass. Defensive end Stefan Slick led the way for the Arabians with four big sacks on the night. Safety Brian McNeil recovered a fumble for the Arabians and defensive tackle Justin Hornback added a fumble recovery and a sack to the Arabian effort. The JV team has won two in a row to even their record at 2-2 on the season and travel to Delta next Monday.
