W SECT. 19: Noblesville perseveres at Hamilton Heights

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director
ARCADIA – For those who doubt that wrestling is a team sport, the results of the Hamilton Heights Sectional held Jan. 30 should put all doubts to rest. The Noblesville Millers captured the team title despite crowning only one individual champion and having only three grapplers in championship matches.
That, my friends, is called team depth.
Noblesville claimed the title in an exciting three-way battle with Pendleton Heights and emerging small-school power Tri-Central. The Millers edged Pendleton by 10.5 points and the Trojans by just 19, and they did it by placing 13 wrestlers fifth or higher in their respective weight classes.
Both the Arabians and Tri-Central placed only 10 that high in the standings.
Outstanding championship performances included a first-period pin by Montrail Johnson of Tri-Central at 145 pounds over Nicholson of Pendleton Heights. At 152, Sammy Benett of Anderson Highland scored a technical fall over Noblesville’s Keene midway through the second period. Bennett had already scored 20 points in just over five minutes.
Finally, Derrick Holpuch of Noblesville took just 44 seconds to register a pin in the championship match at 189 over Maluvac of Elwood.
