BOYS BB: ARABIANS DEFEAT NEW PALESTINE 58-44

The Pendleton Heights boys basketball team got out to a 9-2 lead early and never looked back en route to a 58-44 victory over conference foe New Palestine on Saturday night.

The Arabians (5-5, 2-2) led 20-5 after one quarter and stretched their lead to 17 points by halftime. Nathan Hendershot led the PH scoring effort as the lone man in double-figures with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Kendall Waters, Michael Maxwell, Patrick Obras, and Nick Swartz added eight points apiece for the Arabians, but each one brought something extra to the win.

Waters had six assists and five steals, Maxwell knocked in two first quarter 3’s, Obras pulled down seven rebounds, and Swartz grabbed six boards.

PH shot 51 percent from the field (20-of-39) and held New Palestine to 31 percent shooting (15-of-48).

Head coach Brian Hahn was pleased with the victory but said his team needs to keep its momentum going this week when it hosts Shelbyville and Highland.

SW: Mt. Vernon girls, Yorktown boys claim HHC championships

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

The big question heading into Saturday’s Hoosier Heritage
Conference Swimming Meet was whether Yorktown would maintain its dominance on
the female side of the competition, or would Pendleton Heights
finally break through for a title. The ultimate answer was neither. Mt. Vernon
pulled off the surprise, winning the gilts’ championship. The Marauders edged
Pendleton Heights 289 to 252 with Yorktown
finishing third.

In the boys’ competition, Yorktown
again took the crown. The Tigers amassed 276 points to outdistance New
Palestine who ended second with 260. Mt.
Vernon
came in third on
that side of the meet.

The storyline of the girls’ meet was the depth of Mt. Vernon.
The Marauders won the crown despite winning only one event, the 200yard
Freestyle Relay. Compare that with Pendleton
Heights
. The Arabian
women won six events on the day. That includes a double win by Nikki Weston.
She took both the 100 Yard Butterfly and the 200 Yard Individual medley.
However, the Marauders scored well in nearly every event, overcoming the lack
of individual titles.

Yorktown won seven events
on the boys’ side of the meet. Again, it was the depth of New Palestine that
kept this one close. The Dragons won the 400 Yard freestyle Relay to bring the
final margin as close as it was.

Here is a look at the final team scores.

Arabian wrestlers win Tipton Invitational

Arabians Claim Tipton Wrestling Championship

The 40th Arabian Wrestling Team continued its winning ways Saturday, capturing the Tipton Invitational Championship—its third team title of the season—as they outdistanced the field by nearly 100 points on the strength of a complete team effort. That effort started in the tournament’s first round as the Arabians advanced all 14 wrestlers with wins. That performance staked the Arabians to a 50 point lead which they worked to increase through the day.

The second round saw little slowing of the pace as 11 Arabians advanced to the finals. The strong semi-finals performance gave the Arabians a 100 point lead which remained virtually unchanged during the final round as the Arabians brought home six individual titles and five second place finishes. Every Arabian wrestler placed fourth or higher on the day.

Freshman Mason Todd got the ball rolling in the finals with a dominating performance. Todd attacked off the whistle, quickly putting his opponent on his back on the way to a fall in only 1:41 of the first period to grab the 103 lb. title. Andrew Wilson followed Todd to the mat intent on bettering his second place performance of a year ago. He faced Northwestern’s Matt Miller whose late score in last year’s 103 title match denied Wilson the title. The Arabian sophomore controlled the action and overcame an injury during the match to forge an 8-2 victory at 112, Miller’s first loss after 28 victories.

Junior Justin Eshelman accelerated the team effort as he immediately took Zach Davis from Taylor to his back to earn a near fall before securing a buzzer-beating fall at 1:56 of the first period at 119. Eric Jarrett followed with a second place finish at 125. The senior has shown steady improvement all season as he prepares for his final IHSAA tournament campaign.

Zach Sanner scored one of the day’s biggest upsets. Sanner, seeded fourth in the tournament, pinned first seed Tyler Hume in the semi-finals before pinning his finals opponent at 5:56 to claim the 130 championship. Freshman Alex Ray also wrestled his way to the finals of the 135 class where he dropped a 7-0 decision to first seeded senior Doug Kleinknight of Taylor. Cody Stephenson came from behind in the semi-finals to score a pin and advance to the 140 championship before dropping a decision. The sophomore has shown great promise in his second year varsity season. Freshman Clint Nicholson recovered from illness and injury earlier in the week to claim third place at 145.

Nick Holt was the next championship finalist for the Arabians and didn’t disappoint. The senior came out on top of an intense scramble in the first period of the 152 final with first seed Jake Evans of Clinton Central. In the second period he caught Evans in a front headlock/cradle combination for a fall in 2:46. Senior Matt Todd’s day included a :44 fall, a 23-7 technical fall and a 160 lb. championship match pin in 3:22. For his efforts Matt was named the meet’s Outstanding Wrestler by a vote of the head coaches.

Jasper Moffitt placed second at 171. In the semi-finals he pinned Taylor’s Christian Harvey, whose record stood at 25-2 in :45. Junior Henry Nichols wrestled one of the tournament’s outstanding matches in the 189 finals before dropping a 5-3 decision. Sophomore Kyle Smitherman overcame an ankle sprain that kept him from practicing almost all week to finish third with a rousing pin in 3:47, claiming third place at 215. Freshman Kyle Babb turned in another strong performance filling in for injured heavyweight Brian Catellier who should return to action this week. Babb finished fourth on the day, adding to the Arabian margin of victory.

BB: Madison Co. Tourney: Arabian girls win easily, boys lose in final seconds

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

Sometimes it
works just like you drew it up, and sometimes it works that way for the other
guy. That, in a nutshell, is the story of Pendleton Heights’ night in the first
round of the Madison County tourney. The Arabians travelled to Frankton for a
boys/girls doubleheader against the Eagles. The girls returned victorious in a
game where everything worked as planned. The boys returned having lost a game
because a Frankton inbound play did the same.

The Arabian
girls used a three-quarter court 1-2-2 zone press to harass Frankton into
numerous turnovers and even more bad decisions throughout the game. They raced
to a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. That lead
grew to 35-16 at halftime on the strength of some outstanding outside shooting.
Frankton played a sagging man-to-man defense, defying the Arabians to beat them
from outside, and Coach Sherri Dowd’s troops were more than willing to oblige.

Mur Hagerman
led the assault for Pendleton Heights. The junior scored a game high 21 points
and was deadly from the perimeter. After the game, she said it was just one of
those nights when things clicked. Her comments are in the video player in this
page.

Things
looked equally bright for the boys early in the contest. The Arabians sprinted
to a 12-2 lead late in the first quarter. They had forced Frankton into several
early turnovers and were shredding the Eagles’ man-to-man defense.

The quick
start led to the key development in the game. Frankton switched to a 3-2 zone
late in the quarter and it changed the entire personality of the game.
Pendleton struggled to find open shots against the defense and the Eagles went
on a 16-5 run, taking the lead at 18-17 midway through the second quarter. The
Arabians eventually began finding openings in the zone, but by that time
Frankton had found its footing on offense and from that point the contest was a
battle. At intermission, the Eagles held a 24-22 advantage.

After the
break, Pendleton began to score inside nearly at will, but they couldn’t stop
Frankton on the other end. As the third quarter progressed, the Arabians
unfortunately got away from the inside success they had early in the period.
Their last seven shots of the quarter were from beyond the arc, and they were
not falling. Frankton stretched the lead to eight, 45-37, heading into the
final stanza.

A refresher
course from Coach Brian Hahn on what had been successful put the Arabians on
the comeback road. Back to back buckets from freshman Patrick Obras cut the
lead to 49-48 and moments later Nathan hendershot drained a three-pointer to
tie the game at 51. The closing minutes were a possession by possession
dogfight. It eventually resulted in a 55-55 tie with 12 seconds remaining and
Frankton having possession on its own baseline. After a timeout, the Eagles ran
a perfectly executed onbound play to take the lead. The best the Arabians could
muster in the closing seconds was a contested jumper from Kendall Waters at the
horn that fell short.

One of the
great things about a young team is the opportunity they have to learn from
everything that happens to them. One lesson the Arabians will take from this
contest will be how to let the game come to you and still be a deadly force.
That was the case for Frankton’s Adam Hendricks who led all scorers with 24
points. They were a quiet, but deadly 24 to the Arabians. The 18 of 29 shooting
by Frankton was just enough to overcome the 19 turnovers the Arabians were able
to force. Hendershot led Pendleton Heights with 14 points and Obras added 13
markers.

The Arabian
girls will now play Elwood in the second round on Wednesday night. The boys
will contest Liberty Christian in the consolation round.
