The New Palestine Dragons earned their third sectional title in a row after defeating Pendleton Heights in a close game Oct. 18. In a 1-1 tie game, NP’s Jessica Box scored on a penalty kick to give the Dragons a 2-1 victory over favored Pendleton Heights.
Pendleton Heights easily beat the Dragons in the regular season, and the Arabians’ record was incredibly strong (15-1-2) going into Saturday night’s championship game. In fact, the Arabians owned the first half and were on the board early with a goal in the first 12 minutes.
But at halftime, the Dragons decided to kick it up a notch — if they could go on to victory in the two years previous, they could surely do it again. And they did.
NP’s other goal came from freshman Lauren Kehrt as she scored on an open net against Pendleton Heights’ freshman goalie Kinzie Davis, who was unable to get back to her post in time for a block. The Dragons’ defense, meanwhile, had just as much to do with the win.
Goalie Amanda Curry sealed the deal with a tough block just 35 seconds after her team’s successful penalty kick, and Britney Shull added to it by hindering an Arabian goal attempt shortly thereafter.
New Palestine (14-3-2) moves on to face top-ranked Noblesville (16-0-2) Oct. 22 in the Zionsville Regional, with the survivor advancing to the North Central (Indianapolis) Semistate on Saturday.
